The citrus pectin molecule is too large to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Like cellulose, citrus pectin travels through the digestive tract, acting as a prebiotic fiber source. Thorne’s Pectinate® contains pH-modified pectin, which has been pH modified to break the citrus pectin molecule into much smaller pieces that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.* This modified citrus pectin, because of its molecular makeup and electrical charge, can surround and trap metallic ions, allowing them to subsequently be gently eliminated from the body.* Alginate, from seaweed, is comprised of chains of polysaccharides that can surround and trap metal ions.* R-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing antioxidant that can bind to metal ions and increases levels of the essential intracellular antioxidant glutathione.* R-lipoic acid also serves as an antioxidant in the body.*
